Jul. 19th, 2005 @ 11:05 pm SS-013 - Holographic Pirates Are The Worst Kind
A big thanks to J. Yossarian for his aid in this comic. He recently donated his old Lego to the Starship Explorer cause, which provided us with many pirates. Alas, I couldn't get a parrot or Jolly Roger in this strip in a way I was happy with, but I will try and get them in somewhere.

Also, it's not a continuity error ... the Captain's spear is taken off him between panels 2 and 3, you just don't see it because the pirates are also ninjas and move too fast for you to see. That's right.

See you on Saturday!

Jul. 18th, 2005 @ 07:33 pm Backdated updates ...
Just thought I'd point out that I made a couple of backdated (hence not on friends list) entries about two updates to the comic. If you read the RSS feed, then you probably already knew.

But check out

Starship Explorer is back baby! We have a lot of scripts ready to go, and we're going to be updating Wednesday / Saturday for now.

You know, when Xoqz and I were doing this comic - rather quickly I might add - we were commenting on how easy "Bridge" comics are for us now. Got me to thinking about the very first strip we did. You know, the one with the bridge and the awful all black background ...

So anyway, I briefly thought about "re-touching" it, and giving it the wonderfully technical gradient we enjoy now, but then we decided that no, we're not George Lucas.

See you next time. Wednesday. I promise!

Okay, that was a break!

Starship Explorer is back, and hopefully with full force. Over our break, enforced mostly by day jobs and study, we've managed to write a whole lot of scripts, and we have a couple of story arcs mapped out ready to go. Which of course means that I need to turn them into comics and post them. I'm working on that.

In the meantime, two thirds of the SS Explorer team will be in Melbourne this weekend, attending Continuum, but fingers crossed that you see the next comic on Saturday.

After that, we're hoping to do a Wednesday / Saturday update cycle. And this time we mean it!

Enjoy the comic. See you next time!

In case you missed it, we updated on Saturday.

This comic feels like cheating, because it was quite an easy one to do, but it's setting up a lot. We're also playing with ... concurrent sub-plots!

Okay, so, we've got another strip planned for "the weekend". Since all three of the Starship Explorer crew are going paintballing on Saturday, odds are you'll see a new comic on Sunday evening. And then another one on Tuesday! The updates are plentiful! We're going to try and keep up the whole "two per week" thing, although it will probably be "Tuesday and some other day of the week" for the next few weeks, until we find a good rhythm.

See you on Sunday!

Yes, Starship Explorer is back! Okay, so most people would get a few more than 8 strips out before taking a break, but hey, Sith Happens.

I'm going to try and get another comic out on Tuesday and then, hopefully, get another one out before the end of next weekend, and then another next Tuesday. Okay, I've just set myself up for some trouble there, but I'd like to get this rolling a little more often, and we've got the scripts to do it, I just need to get the shots sorted.

In other developments in between strips, I got myself an iMac G5. This marks the beginning of me as a mac user by preference. This strip was created with Photoshop CS on OS X 10.4, and apart from having to find a couple of the fonts I had on my PC and copy them across, it was a very pleasant experience, although there is virtually no difference in Photoshop on either operating system.

Anyway, the comic is up, and I'm off to prepare Tuesday's. See you then!

May. 3rd, 2005 @ 12:01 am SS-008 - When you want something done ...
This week's comic took a lot of work, although most of it went in to designing the shuttlecraft. Thanks to J. Yossarian for all his help.

A few people mentioned that they wanted more frequent updates. I've been talking to Xoqz and Dievle, and hopefully we'll be able to start updating twice a week in the not-too-distant future. We'd be looking at Tuesday and Friday updates to start with. We've got the ideas, it's just turning them into full scripts...

But for now, enjoy the conclusion to our first mini-arc, and I'll see you next week!

This long weekend couldn't have come at a better time. Funny though ... this time I had a whole extra day to get the comic updated, but this week's strip was probably the quickest strip yet to create. Of course, that was counterbalanced by the fact that I didn't start doing it until Monday night, but hey ... I did still have time to change all the images from png to jpg (much smaller now) and bollocks up the underlying code of the site though.

The SS Explorer colony on ourcolony has grown. If you're not already involved, join our colony by following the link and entering the code 57400842. When the challenges come up, if you have any clue, enter the text in the box. For any discussion of the challenges, email xeyr@ssexplorer.com.

As always, throw any feedback our way via email, it is muchly appreciated. Also, we have soft, tender and malleable minds, and we're hideous populists, so we'll do everything you say.

Enjoy our foray into continuity, and see you next week.

The moral of the story known as "this week" is that I should always do the comic on the weekend, because something will come up on Monday and Tuesday is too late. Nevertheless, this week's strip is up and with 20 minutes or so to spare.

I discovered ourcolony this week. It's a game based on building "colonies" of people and then using the collaborative powers of the group to solve challenges. If you're interested, head over to http://www.ourcolony.net and enter 'play' into the empty field. When you're in the lounge, go to 'Join Existing Colony' and enter 57400842. Once you're in there, it's just a matter of waiting until the challenges come up. Any queries about this, email xeyr@ssexplorer.com.

So that's it, for another week. As always, feedback to comic@ssexplorer.com and see you next week!

Slowly but surely the crew builds up. This strip was strangely frustrating to make, and in the end there were a few different shots that would've been better, but we couldn't get them to work in 3 panels.

Still, it's another episode, and (if I do say so myself) I don't think it's too shabby!

See you next Tuesday
